Rare Photography Exhibit on Display at the Silent Wings Museum
Friedrich Wilhelm Jakobsmeier, 88, of Lubbock, obtained a unique perspective of World War II while serving with the German Luftwaffe as a war reporter. Seventy years later, beginning on June 5, he tells his story at the Silent Wings Museum as part of an exhibit to be unveiled during the event commemorating the sixty-sixth anniversary of D-Day.
The exhibit, "One Man's War: The World War II Photographs of Friedrich Wilhelm Jakobsmeier," will be on display at the museum from June 1 to August 22. It will be one of many highlights for the weekend commemoration. Donald Abbe, Ph.D, Silent Wings Museum Curator, has been working with Jakobsmeier to document and present Jakobsmeier’s work for the exhibit.
"We are working toward two goals," said Abbe. "The first is to show the public these rare photographs of warfare. The other is to convey the common aspects of war. Everything [Fritz] did and saw in the German Army, the American and British Army saw as well."
