General Requirements: A homeowner can do any work on their homestead except for electrical. A licensed electrician must pull a permit and do all needed electrical work. If a general contractor is doing the work they must be registered with the City of Lubbock. See
Contractor Registration Form. IF YOU ARE UNSURE WHETHER THE WORK YOU ARE GOING TO DO REQUIRES A PERMIT, PLEASE SEE THE “DOES THE WORK REQUIRE A PERMIT” SECTION UNDER REPAIRS.
When remodeling your home the city needs to see what you are trying to do on paper. You can accomplish this by drawing a floor plan of your home as it is right now. Then draw a separate floor plan of how you want it after the remodel is complete. This will give the plan examiner a clear view of what you are trying to get done.
If the remodel consists of replacing, deleting, or adding windows and/or doors, or insulation, a ResCheck (energy compliance) will be required. You can download free ResCheck software at http://www.energycodes.gov
. If the remodel is done on a house that lies in a flood zone, a elevation certificate is required.
Bring two copies of each plan, the ResCheck, and elevation certificate, if applicable to Building Inspection located at 1625 13th Street, Room 106. Permit Fees will need to be paid and inspections will need to be done throughout construction.
